Adele and Amy Winehouse, godesses from the 21st century


  • British soul maintained and even extended its high profile with figures like Joss Stone, Amy Winehouse and Adele
  • New group of singer/songwriters, including KT Tunstall and James Blunt, achieved international success.
  • New forms of dance music emerged, fusing hip hop with garage to form grime.
  • There was also a revival of garage rock and post punk, which when mixed with electronic music produced new rave.

Rock and Pop revollution: Coldplay and The Spice Girls


  • In the 1990s, the singles charts were dominated by boy bands and girl groups like Take That, and Spice Girls
  • Alternative rock reached the mainstream, which led to the commercial success of Britpop bands like Blur and Oasis; followed by a stream of post-Britpop bands like Snow Patrol and Coldplay.




Coldplay are an English alternative rock band from London, formed in 1998.

Members: Chris Martin (lead vocals, keyboards, guitar), Jonny Buckland (lead guitar), Guy Berryman (bass guitar), and Will Champion (drums, backing vocals, other instruments).










The Spice Girls were a British pop girl group formed in 1994. The group consisted of five members, who each later adopted nicknames: Melanie Brown ("Scary Spice"), Melanie Chisholm ("Sporty Spice"), Emma Bunton ("Baby Spice"), Geri Halliwell ("Ginger Spice"), and Victoria Beckham ("Posh Spice").


They were first named 'Touch' but they decided to change it and one of them thought about Spice because of how different they were from each other. They all dressed differently, acted differently... but there was already a rapper called Spice so they had to change it to Spice Girls.






New genres: Reggae


  • Rock and pop music in the 1980s built on the post punk and new wave movements and sub-genres.
  • The Police and UB40, enjoyed considerable single chart success.
  • Jamaican music developed into reggae





UB40 are a British reggae/pop band formed in 1978

More than 50 singles in the UK Singles Chart

 The band has been nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album four times, and in 1984, were nominated for the Brit Award for Best British Group.

The 70's boom: Led Zepellin and Queen


  • New forms of music: folk rock and psychedelic rock.
  • Several important and influential sub-genres were created in Britain in this period
  • In the middle years of the decade the influence of the pub rock and American punk rock movements led to the British intensification of punk
  • Mix of different forms of music and influences to dominate rock and pop music



Led Zeppelin were an English rock band formed in London in 1968. The band consisted of guitarist Jimmy Page, singer Robert Plant, bassist and keyboardist John Paul Jones, and drummer John Bonham.

They were originally going to be called The New Yardbirds until The Who's drummer Keith Moon remarked they would go down like a "lead zeppelin". 

Between 1971 and 1975 Led Zeppelin could justifiably claim to be the biggest band in the world





Queen are an English rock band formed in London in 1970, originally consisting of Freddie Mercury (lead vocals, piano), Brian May (guitar, vocals), John Deacon (bass guitar), and Roger Taylor (drums, vocals).

. The group is well known for its sports anthems and classic rock radio staples, particularly the hits 'We Are the Champions' and 'Bohemian Rhapsody'

 Queen are widely recognised as pioneers of heavy metalglam rock, and stadium rock.





The Beatles and The Rolling Stones: The 60's phenomenon


  • The development of British blues rock helped revitalised rock music and led to the growing distinction between pop and rock music.
  • In the mid-1960s, British bands lead to the hard rock genre.
  • Pop music continued to dominate the singles charts
  • Rock began to develop into diverse and creative sub-genres that characterised the form throughout the rest of the twentieth century.

They are the greatest and most influential act of the rock era












The Rolling Stones are an English rock band formed in London in 1962.
